Suspect charged in shooting homicide of Jimmy McCullous

Bonifay Police Department announced on Monday charges filed on the suspect in the Sept. 17 shooting homicide of 53-year-old Jimmy Junior McCullous.

Raymond Matthew Reid, 31, is charged with murder and armed trespassing after Reid allegedly used a firearm stolen from a vehicle parked at a business located close to where McCullous was found in the eastbound lane of U.S. 90 next to Grocery Outlet.

According to a press release, Reid had lived in the Bonifay area for several years and was McCullous’s neighbor until McCullous died in a local hospital from a single gunshot wound to the abdomen where the bullet appeared to enter and exit the body.

McCullous was discovered around 11:45 p.m. that night a few hours after the firearm was reported stolen.

The release said Reid was identified as a person of interest in the investigation. He has been in custody serving a state probation sentence on unrelated charges.

Reid and his brother, 23-year-old Sean Dawson Reid, were apprehended Sept. 20 after BPD and Holmes County Sheriff’s Office pursued them in a foot chase that had Holmes County High School and Bonifay K-8 School on lockdown out of precaution that afternoon. The men were tracked down to a residence on Banfill Avenue.

Raymond Reid was charged at that time with armed burglary, grand theft and violation of probation.

BPD Chief Chris Wells said investigators were able to use forensic evidence to link Reid to the scene of the stolen firearm and the scene of the homicide.

Surveillance from businesses in the area of where a Smith & Wesson 9mm was reported stolen a few hours prior to the shooting was also used in the investigation.

The release said Reid’s first appearance for the murder and armed trespass warrants is set for Tuesday morning.
