Southern Cornbread

Traditional Southern cornbread with a crispy crust and moist center.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Grease a cast-iron skillet.
  2. In a large bowl, combine cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk, oil, and eggs.
  4. Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients and stir until just combined.
  5. Pour batter into prepared skillet and bake for 20-25 minutes, until golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Notes

Serve warm with butter or honey.
