Community gathers at Pine Log Fire Station for open house and fundraiser

The Pine Log District Fire Station welcomed residents on Saturday, August 1, for an open house and ribbon cutting celebrating the station’s recent renovation and a major milestone for county fire services. The event marked the first completed project since Holmes County’s fire districts joined the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office under the direction of Chief Jeff McVay.

Attendees met members of Holmes County Fire Rescue, and enjoyed food, fellowship, and activities throughout the afternoon. Beginning Monday, August 3, the station will enter a new chapter with staffed personnel on site Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., providing a firefighter/EMT‑paramedic to respond to fire and medical calls on the west side of the county.

The open house also served as the backdrop for a community fundraiser supporting Holmes County Deputy Steve Herrington in his fight against cancer. Residents from across the county and beyond contributed through donations and a fish‑fry meal, helping ease the financial burden of treatment for Herrington and his family. Herrington played a key role in the station’s remodeling, making the location especially meaningful for the event.

Both the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office and Bonifay Fire‑Rescue expressed gratitude for the strong turnout and the unity shown throughout the day. The Sheriff’s Office noted the outpouring of support as a reminder of the county’s longstanding tradition of coming together for one another, while Bonifay Fire‑Rescue praised the milestone for county fire services and the community’s commitment to supporting Herrington.
