As Bonifay’s cherished Waffle House closes its doors for renovations, a local business owner has stepped up to fill the void, ensuring the community still has a welcoming place to congregate. John Smith, the owner of Big John’s Barbecue and Donuts, has taken it upon himself to provide a safe and enjoyable gathering spot for Holmes County athletes and their families following local football games.
For years, the Waffle House in Bonifay served as a popular post-game destination where young athletes and community members came together to celebrate victories and enjoy each other’s company. However, this week, the sudden closure of the establishment for renovations left many residents disappointed and without a familiar venue.
Recognizing the community’s need, Smith quickly took action. Despite being away in Port Saint Joe this past Friday evening, he made the decision to leave early and return to Bonifay, opening his restaurant to welcome local athletes and their families. His gesture was more than just good business; it was a commitment to fostering community spirit and providing a safe environment for youth.
“I’ve wanted to create a space for after Friday night events for years, but we never had the right facility until now,” Smith explained. “I believe it’s important to offer a place where kids and families can come together and celebrate in a safe environment. After all, I’d rather these students be here, enjoying themselves, than getting into trouble elsewhere.”
Smith’s initiative has been met with gratitude from the community, and he has committed to keeping his establishment open after every Friday night game until the Waffle House reopens.
