Florida Forest Service celebrates Arbor Day throughout Chipola District

Florida Arbor Day will be celebrated on Friday, Jan. 19. The first Arbor Day in the United States was held in Nebraska City, Nebraska on April 10th, 1872, and the tradition continues to this day.

It celebrates all the things trees provide such as shade, enjoyment, clean air, and water. The Florida Forest Service is recognizing this day by having a tree giveaway throughout the seven- county area. Nine locations will host these events.

The local location will be at the parking lot by Bowen Hardware, 108 N Waukesha Street in Bonifay on Saturday, Jan. 20. The giveaway will be from 8 a.m. until trees are gone.

Funding is provided by the Florida Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry Grant with the USDA Forest Service. Trees will be limited to one per person at these events. Species may include Magnolia, Red Maple, Common Persimmon, White Oak, Pecans, Chickasaw Plum, Crabapple and Yellow Poplar.
