A local youth received a lifetime freshwater fishing license at the West Pittman Baptist Wild Game Supper on Saturday, March 8, as part of a program aimed at promoting conservation among future generations.

The giveaway was organized through the Conservation for Generation program, a partnership with the IAFS Extension Office in Holmes County. The program, designed to address declining youth participation in outdoor activities, focuses on increasing conservation knowledge, encouraging youth involvement in hunting and fishing, and fostering mentorship between generations.

The United States has one of the most established wildlife conservation systems in the world, with regulated hunting and fishing playing a critical role in managing wildlife populations. These activities, supported by scientific research and funded through the purchase of conservation licenses and stamps, contribute nearly 60% of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s annual budget. However, participation in outdoor recreation has seen a downward trend, with the number of hunters decreasing significantly over the past decades. This decline has created a pressing need to engage younger generations in conservation efforts.

To address these concerns, the Conservation for Generation program offers a variety of educational and mentorship opportunities, including hunting and fishing workshops, conservation expos, youth fishing tournaments, and the Randy Adams Memorial Lifetime Hunting/Fishing License Scholarship. These initiatives not only provide hands-on learning experiences but also strengthen family bonds and encourage responsible wildlife management.

Ryder S., 13, was selected as the recipient of the lifetime fishing license, which was sponsored by Josh Jackson.

“I really like investing in youth,” Jackson said. “I want to thank the IAFS Extension Office for providing an opportunity for people like me who grew up experiencing the beauty of the outdoors to invest in giving our youth a similar opportunity.”

The Conservation for Generation program continues to offer opportunities for individuals and businesses to support youth participation in outdoor activities. Those interested in contributing can contact the IAFS Extension Office for more information.
