A routine Sunday morning was disrupted around 7:30 a.m. on September 15, when a structure fire on Sideline Boulevard was detected by a concerned citizen. The rapid response of local firefighters, coupled with the brave actions of a local nurse, prevented what could have been a devastating tragedy.
Maddy Wilkerson, who had just finished a 12-hour shift at Doctors Memorial Hospital, was on the way to pick up her children from her mother-in-law’s house when she noticed black smoke. She realized the smoke was coming from underneath a neighboring house. Understanding the potential danger, Wilkerson took immediate action. Knowing that both children and their parents lived in the home, she dialed 911 and began to attempt to wake the sleeping residents by banging on windows and doors.
“From my time as a CNA at Doctors Memorial I know every second counts in these situations,” said Wilkerson. “I work with some of the best nurses, and I learn something new each shift.”
The Bonifay Police Department was on the scene to assist, and mutual aid was provided by Chipley Fire Rescue and Esto Fire Department. “Everyone responded in a timely manner and helped out,” said Wilkerson. “Teamwork is very important in times like this.”
“I’m very thankful that I work for DMH and serve our community with the care and compassion that every person deserves,” said Wilkerson.
