After 17 successful years in business, John Smith and Charlie Mingus opened the doors to their
new location, Big John’s BBQ and Donuts in Bonifay. “I am excited and nervous. It has been a
blessing,” stated owner John Smith. Big John’s is not just a local favorite; it is a disabled
veteran-owned and operated business with a staff of 33 local community members. The
franchise, which has expanded to 30 locations from Dothan to Panama City, has recently
upgraded its Bonifay outlet to better serve its loyal customers.
Big John’s has gained popularity, selling nearly 7,000 donuts a day. They are on their way to
selling 10,000 Smash Burgers since May of this year. Their desire to create quality food has
earned them recognition from Southern Living as one of the best bakeries in the South. Charlie
Mingus expressed gratitude for the support they’ve received, stating, “We are so thankful for the
city of Bonifay and the local communities.” The sense of community is echoed by Joe Rone, the
Development Commission Director of Holmes County. “We have been working with him (John
Smith) for over three years. We are happy to see him expand. They are really good at working
with us when we have events with other economic developers and businesses coming (to
Bonifay).”
As Big John’s BBQ and Donuts continues to grow, it intends to remain dedicated to its roots in
the community and its commitment to serving delicious food to both new and returning
customers. The grand opening marks a new chapter expanding into a brand new building
designed to better serve the community.
