The Holmes County High School JROTC Raiders took first place at their regional competition
October 12, marking a significant achievement for the program. The victory means the Raiders
will advance to the state competition in November for the first time in a decade.
Led by Senior Military Army Instructor Major Justin Shaw and Sergeant 1st Class Army
Instructor Brian Lohman, the Raiders’ Gold Team secured first place, while the Blue Team
earned a respectable third place finish. This exceptional performance highlights the hard work
and dedication of the entire team.
The Raiders competed in five grueling events, showcasing their physical and tactical abilities.
The team, made up of fourteen members with ten cadets participating in each event, had the
flexibility to rotate cadets depending on the challenge. Events included a 5K run, a 100-meter
tire flip, and the Cross Country Rescue (CCR) event. The CCR involved a one-mile course
through the woods, simulating a downed pilot rescue while carrying a weighted stretcher and
backpacks. The final task was the construction and navigation of a one-rope bridge, which
required cadets to work together efficiently to get across the obstacle.
This victory secures their spot in the state competition and breaks a 10-year streak of missing
out on the state stage. The Raiders are now preparing to take on their next challenge in
November.
