A narcotics investigator from the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) discovered a Craigslist ad that stated, “New to the area, looking for ice or crack.” Acting on this information, the investigator undercover posed as a seller and arranged a meeting with the individual in Holmes County. The suspect, identified as Anthony Mata, negotiated to buy an “eight ball” of methamphetamine for $80.
After finalizing the deal, the investigator met Mata at the agreed location. Following the exchange of drugs for money, additional HCSO deputies moved in and arrested Mata and a companion, Stephen Hornsby. Anthony Mata was charged with the purchase of methamphetamine and unlawful use of a two-way communication device while Stephen Hornsby was charged with principal to purchase methamphetamine. Both individuals were taken to the Holmes County Jail.
Sheriff John Tate praised the HCSO narcotics team for their proactive efforts to keep drugs out of Holmes County and for ensuring that those who attempt to distribute or consume drugs are held accountable.
