The Holmes County Development Commission, in collaboration with the Holmes County Board of County Commissioners, has announced they have finalized the sale of an 86-acre property to Busy Bee, a family-owned business based in Lake City, Florida.
With plans to establish a 55,000-square-foot travel center and additional commercial developments on the property, the development commission says this could bring positive changes to Holmes County’s economy.
The centerpiece of the project is the Busy Bee travel center, which allegedly will feature an array of food options, retail merchandise, and what the company describes as the “cleanest restrooms along Interstate 10.”
The Development Commission stated in a press release from December 12 they expect the facility to generate approximately 100 jobs for the local community. Beyond the travel center, the development plan includes utilizing the remaining 60+ acres for hotels, restaurants, and retail establishments, with the aim of further enhancing economic opportunities in the area.
Financial projections from an associated consulting firm estimate that the completed development will produce significant economic benefits for Holmes County and the state:
- $23.8 million in annual sales revenue
- $1.8 million in annual local and state sales tax revenues
- $200,000 in annual property tax revenues for Holmes County
As part of its commitment to the community, Busy Bee has allegedly donated a portion of the property for the construction of a new Bonifay Fire & Rescue station. This addition is said to enhance emergency response capabilities and improve public safety in the region.
“This project represents a transformative moment for Holmes County,” said Joe Rone, Executive Director of the Holmes County Development Commission. “We’re not just selling land; we’re creating a catalyst for economic revitalization that will benefit our entire community for years to come.”
Elizabeth and Lucas Waring, the owners of Busy Bee, highlighted their commitment to supporting rural communities. “Our family understands the potential of rural communities. This development isn’t just a business opportunity – it’s an investment in the future of North Florida, bringing jobs, services, and economic vitality to a region that has always been close to our hearts,” they stated.
Bonifay Mayor Larry F. Cook also emphasized the project’s significance. “We are thrilled to welcome the Waring family to the City of Bonifay, along with the businesses, visitors, and new residents the development will bring. This landmark project and investment will significantly impact our community, creating opportunities and lasting benefits that will influence Bonifay for generations. Our city is truly fortunate to be a part of this pivotal moment,” Cook said.
Construction on the project is slated to begin in 2025.
