Holmes County deputies arrested an Alabama man Saturday, August 15, after he allegedly attempted to break into multiple businesses in Esto while wearing a ski mask.
According to the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to reports of a suspicious person seen trying to enter local businesses. When deputies arrived, the suspect fled on foot toward a nearby vehicle. Deputies boxed the vehicle in, preventing it from leaving, and ordered the occupant out. The suspect was identified as James Hobbs of Alabama.
Deputies located a pickaxe and ski mask matching the caller’s description. During questioning, Hobbs admitted to knocking the glass out of a door at Big Daddy Liquor and attempting to break into the Smoke Shack and Express Lane. .
Hobbs was arrested and charged with three counts of attempted burglary, possession of burglary tools, criminal mischief, and possession of a controlled substance.
Holmes County Sheriff John Tate thanked the citizen who reported the suspicious activity, saying the quick call provided deputies with valuable information that led to the suspect’s arrest. He also commended the responding deputies for their professionalism and swift action.
Authorities remind residents to report suspicious activity immediately, noting that timely calls can help prevent crimes or assist law enforcement in apprehending suspects.
