Commissioners choose FDOT road projects

The Holmes County Board of County Commissioners chose projects for Small County Road Assistance Program (SCRAP) and Small County Outreach Program (SCOP) when they met in regular session Jan. 17.

County engineers give recommendations to the board on which roads are best suited for the funding applications, and the board makes the final decision. Commissioners chose to place Highway 177A north of U.S. 2 to the Alabama state line and Dykes Street as their SCRAP projects. Malcolm Taylor Road will be the choice for SCOP. Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is the funding source for the five-year work program which means these roads, if approved, are expected to be funded in 2028.

Also in the meeting, commissioners awarded employee of the month to Juan Vasquez. Vasquez is a heavy equipment operator who started as a temporary FEMA employee in 2017. County Manager David Corbin said it is Vasquez’s great work ethic that won him the accolade.

“Juan is a good guy whose heart is in the right place, we are lucky to have him working for Holmes County,†Corbin said.

Holmes County Board of County Commissioners will meet again in regular session at 6 p.m. Feb. 7.
