The City of Bonifay is looking to fill an opening for its public works director position.

“Our public works director has left his position to take another position elsewhere, so we are advertising for his position,” Deputy City Clerk Tracy Walker said during a City Council meeting Monday, May 6. “We will be closing this position on 5/17 at 3 p.m. and start the interviews on 5/20.”

Trey Barbee was the former director and has accepted a new position as the public works director for Washington County.

A job summary in the listed opening on the City of Bonifay website said the public works director would oversee “the planning, coordination, and execution of infrastructure projects and services.”

“Responsibilities include managing budgets, supervising staff, ensuring regulatory compliance, and fostering stakeholder relationships,” the job posting said. “This role requires strong leadership, project management skills, and the ability to work in diverse environments, both in the field and in the office.”

The director would “oversee a diverse range of projects, from road maintenance to stormwater management, working closely with city departments and community stakeholders to address current needs and plan for future growth,” the job description continued.

The job would also involve regulatory compliance, record keeping, and safety oversight.

A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, public administration, or urban and regional planning is preferred, though a year of similar professional experience may qualify a candidate instead.

A minimum of six years of “progressively responsible experience in local government organization work,” including one to two  years of “responsible supervisory experience” is also required.

Other qualifications are listed in the job posting. Salary is negotiable.
