In a significant move to enhance the readiness and safety of its emergency responders, the Pittman Volunteer Fire Department recently hosted an intensive Emergency Vehicle Operations (EVO) class. This course, designed to bolster the driving skills and operational knowledge of volunteer firefighters, combined both rigorous classroom instruction and practical, hands-on driver training. The program’s goal was to ensure that local firefighters are fully prepared to operate emergency vehicles safely and effectively, especially in high-pressure situations where every second counts.

The event saw participation from 13 dedicated volunteers representing various local fire departments, reflecting a strong commitment to community safety across the region. Of these attendees, eight volunteers hailed from the Black Volunteer Fire Department, showcasing their dedication to maintaining high operational standards. Three more participants came from the Noma Volunteer Fire Department, while the host department, Pittman, was represented by two of its own volunteers.

The classroom component of the EVO class focused on the critical principles of emergency vehicle operation, including the importance of maintaining control under extreme conditions, understanding the dynamics of heavy vehicles, and the legal aspects of emergency response driving. Through a series of detailed lectures and interactive discussions, participants were educated on the nuances of safe driving practices, the physics of vehicle control, and the protocols to follow during emergency responses.

In addition to theoretical knowledge, the training emphasized real-world application through a comprehensive driver training program. This segment of the course took the participants behind the wheel, challenging them to navigate a series of practical driving exercises designed to simulate emergency conditions. This hands-on approach allowed firefighters to experience firsthand the challenges they might face while driving an emergency vehicle in a real-life scenario.
