Hobby turns to business for local bull whip craftsman

[GARETT VALCOURT | The Advertiser] James Faircloth creates handmade bullwhips from paracord and Kangaroo hide, creating a durable product for ranchers and farmers.

James Faircloth, a Holmes County local, has turned a hobby into a business. Faircloth has been hand-making nylon bullwhips for 35 years.

He made his first many years ago after being unable to purchase one, driving him to get creative.

“My cousin has bought one and I really liked it,” said Faircloth. “But I couldn’t afford it at the time, so I tried my hand at making one.”

He said it took a few tries to perfect the craft and learn what materials to use. Now, Faircloth is widely known for his product and attends county fairs across the South. “I’ve been to South Florida and Tennessee to do demonstrations,” said Faircloth. “It just gives me something to keep me busy, and I enjoy it.”

Unfortunately, James will not be selling at the Northwest Florida Championship Rodeo due to knee surgery, but he will begin taking orders again soon.

For more information on the bullwhips and how to order, contact Faircloth at 850-547-3997.
