Incumbent Larry Cook has announced he is running to stay in the Bonifay Mayor seat. The election for the position will be held Tuesday, March 27. Early voting opened Thursday, March 21, and will last through Monday, March 25, from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. (excluding the weekend).
“Nine months ago I became the mayor after the resignation of our former mayor. During those nine months, I have worked with our council and community leaders to accomplish much for our city,” Cook said. “Several miles of water mains and almost a third of our fire hydrants have been replaced. We’re working with the sheriff’s office to renovate our outdated City Hall and it should reopen by the fall.”
With the appointment of Chief Whitaker, The Bonifay Police Department has hired more officers, new vehicles, and moved to its own facility in the old sheriff’s office, he said.
“The quality of police protection has been greatly improved over the past year,” Cook said. “For far too long, our city provided an inadequate retirement plan for our employees. We have been able to get all full-time workers on state retirement, a far better system. Having that option will also enhance our ability to recruit and retain good employees.”
Plans are underway to replace miles of sidewalks and for enhancements to our city parks, he said.
“I am working with the Highway 79 Corridor Authority to get greater benefits for our city with the developments coming to that area,” Cook said. “It has been my pleasure to serve you as mayor, and I hope you will give me the chance to serve you again. Together we can move Bonifay forward and make this an even better place to live.”
