To bolster readiness for the hurricane season, Florida Division of Emergency Management Executive Director Kevin Guthrie recently held a meeting with emergency management directors from Holmes, Washington, Okaloosa, Walton, and Santa Rosa counties.

The meeting, held in Walton County, focused on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) predictions indicating an increased likelihood of an active hurricane season.

During the meeting, comprehensive discussions were held on various critical aspects of hurricane preparedness. Topics included strategic preparedness measures, mutual aid agreements between counties for supplies, and the procurement of essential items such as personal protective equipment, water, sandbags, and generators.

Guthrie reportedly emphasized the importance of pre-ordering supplies to ensure timely availability during emergencies. The coordination of efforts surrounding general population and special needs shelters was a key point of discussion, with a focus on effective collaboration with local community partners.

Maintaining robust communication throughout the storm and recovery phases was highlighted as a priority. The directors explored ways the state could provide preparedness aid to counties ahead of any storms, ensuring that necessary items and services are in place for both preparedness and post-storm recovery.

The deployment of Community Emergency Response Team from other areas was also addressed, with plans to mobilize these teams as needed to provide crucial assistance during emergencies.
