Esto residents question high water bills

HANNAH COLLINS | The Advertiser

Residents of Esto have been noticing a significant increase in their water bills for January, and the Town of Esto has stepped forward to explain the reasons behind this surge. According to a release from the Town of Esto February 4, three main factors have contributed to the higher than usual water bills.

The first factor referenced in the release is the impact of the winter storm that hit the area from January 20-24. As temperatures dropped below freezing, many residents took precautions to prevent pipes from freezing by leaving water taps or spigots dripping. While this measure was effective, it also added hundreds of gallons to their water bills. Additionally, some residents may have experienced frozen or broken pipes, leading to substantial water loss and higher bills.

The second factor is the 2025 water rate increase, which went into effect in January, as stated in the release. The new rates include an increase in the base rate for up to 2,000 gallons of water usage and a higher price for any water used beyond that base. Residents can view the new rates on the town’s website at estoflorida.com.

The third factor, according to the release, is the adjustment in billing periods. Due to the Christmas holiday, the December 2024 water meter readings were taken a few days early, and January’s readings were taken a few days late due to the winter storm. As a result, the January 2025 bills cover a longer period of usage, from December 19, 2024, through January 28, 2025.

In response to the concerns of its residents, the Town of Esto is offering assistance to those affected by the higher water bills. Residents can contact the town clerk, Ben Tew at 850-263-6521 or [email protected] to discuss payment plans or ask questions. The town clerk is also available in person at the Esto Town Hall, Monday-Thursday from 8 am to 1pm.

Furthermore, the Esto Town Council will meet Tuesday, February 18, at 7:00 pm at Esto Town Hall to address any concerns from Esto Water Works customers. Residents are encouraged in the release to attend the meeting to voice their concerns and seek solutions.
