The Florida Supreme Court on Thursday unanimously turned down an appeal by a Death Row inmate convicted of kidnapping a woman in Holmes County and murdering her in 2010.
Inmate Johnny Mack Sketo Calhoun argued that the case had “newly discovered evidence” because of an alleged jailhouse confession by another man, according to Thursday’s ruling. But the Supreme Court said a circuit judge held an evidentiary hearing on the issue and found that the other man had not confessed. “Competent, substantial evidence supports the trial court’s finding,” the Supreme Court opinion said.
Calhoun, now 45, was convicted of kidnapping and murdering Mia Chay Brown, whose body was found in a burned car in Alabama.
