Thirteen-year-old Parker M. qualified for the state championship after placing in the top competitors at the county level and the Northwest District competition.

Parker was one of 29 grillers to compete in the protein category which includes beef, pork, chicken, and shrimp. Of the five competitors to use shrimp, Parker reigned supreme.

The contest was sponsored by Florida 4-H, Sonny’s BBQ and Publix. Parker won a $1,500 scholarship.

However, this was not Parker’s first competition. He competed last year but didn’t quite hit the mark.

‘This is a prime example of improvement in skills by attending 4-H camp through the years,’ said Holmes County 4-H Agent Christopher Lauen. ‘All of the skills Parker used to win were acquired during our summer day camps. We are very proud of him and his accomplishments.’
