A Holmes County Commissioner has been charged with two felonies following a joint investigation by the Florida Department of Financial Services (FDFS) and the 14th Judicial Circuit’s State Attorney’s Office.

Both charges are related to District 2 Commissioner Brandon Newsom’s alleged violation of Florida Statutes regarding bail bond agents. The charges surround accusations that Newsom was simultaneously a sworn law enforcement officer and a bail bond agent and that he allowed non-licensed individuals to accept money on behalf of his business, Bail Bonds by Brandon Newsom. If true, both allegations are felony violations of state law.

The FDFS Criminal Investigations Division executed a search warrant at the Holmes County Board of Commissioners office Friday, March 28, seizing a computer that was used by the county’s administrative staff, staff investigators say Newsom directed to accept payments to his business.

According to law enforcement officials, the charges were direct filed on Tuesday, June 24, and Newsom was asked to turn himself in. Newsom has turned himself in shortly before lunch Tuesday and has been released on conditional release. We will update this post as more details become available.
