Esto Public Works Director to take leave of absence

Esto Public Works Director Billy Martin will be taking an extended leave of absence due to an emergency medical issue.

Town Council members Josh Davenport and Maxie Yates will volunteer their time and expertise to support the town during Martin’s absence, the Town of Esto announced in a news release.

“Their commitment reflects the spirit of community within the Town Council and will contribute to maintaining essential services during this period,” the announcement from Town Clerk Ben Tew said.

An emergency Town Council meeting was held March 3 to address the matter.

Martin will receive a weekly payment of $250 to “ensure continued financial stability” while on leave after exhausting sick leave and paid time off.

“The Town Council unanimously agreed to provide ongoing support to the Public Works Director during his recovery period,” the announcement said. “The Council emphasized the importance of Martin prioritizing his health and achieving a full recovery before considering a return to work. Martin’s well-being is a major concern of the town council.”

The Council also authorized creation of a new administrative or city manager position due to reportedly “recognizing the need for contingency planning in the event of future emergencies or prolonged absences of key personnel.”

“This strategic move aims to ensure smoother town operations and mitigate the need for emergency meetings in similar circumstances,” the news release said. “Further details regarding the process for creating the new administrative position will be communicated in due course.”

The Council “expresses its appreciation for the dedication and service of Public Works Director Billy Martin and extends its best wishes for a speedy and full recovery.”
