Suspect at large after pursuit places schools on heightened security

Bonifay K-8 and Holmes County High School dismissed at normal time on Monday after a brief period of being on a heightened security status. The elevated alert came after a Bonifay police officer attempted to stop a vehicle being driven by a subject who had been identified as a person of interest relating to a disturbance at a local grocery store.
The Bonifay Police Department is expected to obtain felony warrants for 23-year-old year Chance Xavier Peterson Spencer of Chipley for fleeing and eluding, child endangerment, and driving while license suspended. He is also facing a misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.
Law enforcement officers say Spencer fled the attempted traffic stop in the area of Panhandle Lane, leaving a minor child behind at the scene.
The child is reported to be safe, and the Bonifay Police Department was processing warrant applications for Spencer as of Tuesday.
Bonifay K-8 and HCHS launched the heightened security status as a precaution during the pursuit; however, the administrators say the school day ended without any campus incidents. Tuesday classes resumed as usual.
