When young Annalise Harrington went into a seizure on Tuesday, Jan. 9, her brother Alexander Harrington did not panic.
Instead, the six-year-old Bonifay K-8 School student called his grandmother for help, which ended up saving his sister’s life. Their mother Victoria Harrington was at the house with the children and tended to Annalise during the seizure.
For his brave efforts, Alex Harrington was honored by Pittman Volunteer Fire Department Chief (PVFD) Alfred Sellers with a certificate on Thursday, Jan. 11, during a Fire Department meeting.
“Alex has received a phone for emergency use (from his grandmother) for Christmas,” Sellers said. “He used the phone, called her, told her that (she) was having a seizure. Then he hung up and called his daddy and let his daddy know what was going on, which started the chain of events for the emergency services and rescue team to be able to respond to assist.”
His dad, Timothy Harrington, was at work when the seizure began. Annalise was released from the hospital on Wednesday, Jan. 10.
“We want to recognize Alex, who is our mascot and who has been our mascot since he was big enough to walk,” Sellers said. “Thank you for being a hero at six years old.”
Alex has jumped into PVFD CPR training even though he can’t get certified, Sellers said.
“I hope he grows up and continues to learn and strives, if he wants to be a firefighter whenever he grows up,” Sellers said.
