A Callaway woman has been arrested in connection with a 2023 fatal shooting in Bonifay.
The Holmes County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of Lois K. Merkel by officers with the U.S. Marshals Florida/Caribbean Regional Fugitive Task Force on Wednesday, Feb. 7.
Merkel had a warrant for a 2nd-degree murder in Holmes County for the shooting of Steven Hall.
“(The Holmes County Sheriff’s Office) originally responded to a 911 call that reported an accidental shooting had occurred at a Bonifay hotel,” HCSO said in a news release. “Through active investigation and forensic evidence taken from the scene, Merkel’s and Hall’s cell phones, etc., investigators were able to determine the story of an accidental shooting Merkel reported was not true.”
Merkel was reportedly transported to the Bay County Jail after her arrest and awaits extradition to Holmes County.
“Due to the tragic and sensitive nature of this case, an extensive investigation was imperative,” the HCSO announcement said. “Forensic evidence is crucial, and takes significant time to process. HCSO prioritizes accuracy and integrity with each case to ensure a thorough investigation and provide the best chance for justice to victims and their loved ones.”
