FHP reports on fatal crash in Holmes County

Holmes County EMS, in conjunction with Walton County Fire and Rescue, responded to the scene of a serious traffic accident on Highway 90, just east of the Walton County line January 3. The Holmes County Sheriff’s Office responded, and the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) was soon en route to assist with the investigation.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the three-vehicle crash on State Road 10 in Holmes County early Friday morning left two people deceased and several others injured.

As stated in a press release from FHP, the incident occurred at 7:45 a.m. when a 77-year-old man from DeFuniak Springs, driving east in a pickup truck, veered into the westbound lane, colliding head-on with another pickup truck driven by a 65-year-old Bonifay woman. The impact caused the eastbound truck to flip and land in a ditch.

The westbound truck rotated and struck a third vehicle, an SUV driven by a 45-year-old woman from Ponce De Leon. The SUV then veered off the road, hitting trees.

According to FHP, the drivers of the first two vehicles were deceased at the scene, and next of kin have been notified. A 36-year-old passenger in the westbound truck sustained critical injuries, while the SUV driver suffered serious injuries.

Authorities are continuing their investigation.
