Holmes County honors first responders for tornado relief efforts

Holmes County Sheriff John Tate and the Holmes County Board of County Commissioners recently recognized the outstanding efforts of local first responders who played a vital role during the county’s May tornado emergency response.

At a recent ceremony, Sheriff Tate presented reimbursement checks to several volunteer fire departments and the Bonifay Police Department as a token of appreciation for their service during the severe weather event.

“This was a moment to say thank you,” said Sheriff Tate. “Each department played a critical role in protecting lives and property during the storm. Their dedication to our communities does not go unnoticed, and we are truly grateful for their selfless efforts.”

• Gritney Fire Department
• Esto Fire Department
• Pine Log Fire Department
• Bonifay Police Department

Officials say the checks served as both a gesture of gratitude and reimbursement for emergency response costs associated with the storm.

In a formal statement, the City of Bonifay and its first responders expressed their appreciation for the county’s support. “We are truly fortunate to serve in a county where cooperation and mutual support are not just values, they are daily practices,” the statement read. “The response to this weather event has once again demonstrated the strength and unity that exists between our local agencies and leadership.”

Special recognition was given to the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office for its coordination efforts. “Your unwavering support, leadership, and coordination during emergency events continue to strengthen the safety net our communities rely on,” the statement continued.

County leaders echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of unity and shared responsibility during times of crisis.

“This event was a reminder of the strong bonds we share and the collective resilience we possess,” the statement concluded. “We remain committed to being there when our communities and fellow agencies need us most.”

The May tornado, which impacted multiple areas across Holmes County, prompted a large-scale response from local emergency personnel. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of these agencies, officials say, damages were mitigated and residents received timely assistance.
