Community unites to restore Corinth Baptist Church after vandalism

Pews inside Corinth Baptist Church in Westville were found overturned and damaged following a recent act of vandalism. Local churches and volunteers later came together to restore the historic community gathering place.

What began as an act of vandalism at a historic Holmes County church quickly turned into a powerful example of neighbors helping neighbors, as local churches and individuals joined together to set things right.

Volunteers from across the area converged on Corinth Baptist Church in Westville, responding to a call for help after pews were found overturned and the sanctuary left in disarray. Members from West Pittman Baptist, Hickory Hill Baptist, Leonia Baptist, and others worked side by side to restore the building.

“It was like the cavalry rolling in,” resident Terri Carroll Fore said. “Men and women from all over came together to right a wrong and show love to their community.”

While Corinth Baptist Church no longer holds regular services, Holmes County Sheriff John Tate noted that it remains a vital landmark. “It’s kind of a staple of the community,” Tate said. “Everybody knows what Corinth Church is and what it means to the people over there. For someone to come in and try to destroy it is just uncalled for.”

Sheriff Tate added that this was not the first time vandals have targeted the property, often linked to trespassing in the area. The Holmes County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information about the incident to call 850-547-4421 or reach out anonymously to Panhandle Crime Stoppers at 1-866-963-8477.

Within hours, pews were back in place, and the church once again stood as a symbol of both history and resilience in Holmes County.
