State Attorney Larry Basford announced that Kathreen Adams has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for Aggravated Manslaughter of a Child. The sentence was imposed by Holmes County Circuit Court Judge Russell Roberts following testimony, legal arguments, and consideration of mitigating factors. Judge Roberts described the sentence as “fair and appropriate” given the circumstances of the case.
Prosecutor Peter Overstreet emphasized the gravity of the incident, highlighting the “horrific” circumstances surrounding the death of Adams’ 23-month-old child. The child was left unattended in a vehicle overnight while Adams and the child’s father, Christopher McLean, reportedly slept after using methamphetamine.
Adams, 25, testified in court, expressing remorse and accepting responsibility for her actions. She stated that she is haunted by the events of that day and the loss of her child. Her attorney presented arguments for a reduced 15-year sentence, citing her cooperation with authorities and demonstrated remorse.
Overstreet acknowledged that the case was tragic with no positive outcomes but noted that Adams’ cooperation played a significant role in the prosecution. In contrast, McLean, 35, did not cooperate and is currently serving a 22-year sentence. Overstreet stated that Adams’ willingness to provide critical information was a mitigating factor in her sentencing.
“Make no mistake, Judge, we agree that the death of this child was horrific, and nothing will change that,” Overstreet stated. He further explained that Adams’ assistance was instrumental in ensuring the prosecution’s success.
Evidence presented in court demonstrated that both parents were under the influence of methamphetamine when they returned home after midnight on May 16, 2023. The child was left inside Adams’ vehicle until mid-afternoon the following day and ultimately succumbed to hyperthermia. Both Adams and McLean were charged with Aggravated Manslaughter of a Child.
Following the sentencing, Overstreet and the defense attorney briefly spoke with Adams, acknowledging her decision to come forward with the truth.
State Attorney Basford expressed appreciation for the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office’s investigative efforts, which contributed to the case’s resolution.
