One charged in hit and run that injured Bonifay cyclist

A 21-year-old man is in custody on charges related to the hit-and-run of a cyclist on August 1 in Bonifay. Payton Cosson is charged with hitting a 45-year-old male cyclist with his motor vehicle at the intersection of Hubbard Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Ave after failing to stop. According to the Bonifay Police Department (BPD), a call was received at approximately 7:04 p.m. reporting the hit-and-run. The vehicle was reportedly traveling northbound and struck the eastbound cyclist as they crossed the intersection. A BPD officer patrolling the area observed the driver fleeing the scene shortly after the incident, and the suspect was later identified with the help of witness statements as 21-year-old Cosson. The 21-year-old driver allegedly fled towards Michigan Ave, where he exited the vehicle and continued to flee on foot. The suspect was later located off of Scenic Hill Circle and is currently in custody at the Holmes County Jail. 

The 45-year-old cyclist was transported to Southeast Medical Center in Dothan, Alabama where he was admitted to the ICU. 

The investigation is ongoing at this time.
