The Holmes County Tourist Development Council (TDC) approved up to $35,000 in funding toward a potential new scoreboard for Holmes County Veterans Memorial Field during its recent meeting, as board members discussed the condition of the existing scoreboard, possible funding partners, and next steps in the process.
The discussion was introduced by TDC board member Jason Powell, who stated that he had contacted Bonifay Kiwanis Club representative Harry Bell regarding possible involvement in the project. Powell reported that Bell indicated he did not feel it was necessary for the Kiwanis Club to attend the meeting at this time.
Powell explained that Bell cited the fact that the purchase of Veterans Memorial Field has not yet been completed and said the Kiwanis Club intended to wait until discussions occur with the Holmes County School District and the superintendent before determining how to proceed.
Bell later addressed the matter, clarifying the Kiwanis Club’s position. He stated that the club has not made a decision regarding a contribution and intends to wait until the school district determines what type of scoreboard is needed and what would best meet the facility’s purpose and budget.
“The board wants Mr. Brown and the district to come up with what kind of scoreboard they want or what they feel is best for the purpose and budget,” Bell said. “Then the Kiwanis board will vote on a donation.”
Bell added that his understanding was that Brown would participate in discussions regarding the scoreboard and that the club preferred for the district to identify its needs before the Kiwanis board considers any financial commitment.
Holmes District Schools Superintendent also spoke during the meeting, stating that he would budget up to $35,000 toward a new scoreboard. He noted that the district plans to issue requests for proposals (RFPs) in January to review multiple scoreboard options before making a decision.
The current scoreboard at Holmes County Veterans Memorial Field was installed in the summer of 2015 through an agreement with Coca-Cola. Under that agreement, Coca-Cola provided the scoreboard while the school district handled installation, and Coca-Cola products were sold at Holmes County High School.
According to the TDC, the existing scoreboard is experiencing an electronic malfunction, which prompted the discussion regarding replacement.
No final decisions have been made regarding the design, vendor, or total cost of a new scoreboard. Further discussions are expected once the status of the field’s purchase is finalized and the school district completes its review of available options.
