HCOA launches weekly ASL classes to foster inclusive communication

The Holmes Council on Aging (HCOA) has recently started offering weekly American Sign Language (ASL) classes, becoming a source of connection for one local senior who is deaf and communicates through sign language. After losing her mother, father, and sister, she found herself facing deep loneliness and decided to begin attending the Council on Aging in Bonifay for support and social interaction.

According to the HCOA, staff and volunteers started out communicating with her through handwritten notes passed back and forth. Wanting to improve the process, they soon began using Hand Talk, a translation app that helped bridge the communication gap. But as relationships grew, so did the desire to offer her more meaningful, accessible interaction.

To strengthen that connection, the HCOA is now bringing in ASL instructor Deborah Baker, who has volunteered to teach sign language classes every Monday at the center, located at 701 East Pennsylvania Avenue in Bonifay. What began as an effort to support one resident has quickly grown into a communitywide opportunity, with the center welcoming community members of all ages to participate in the weekly classes. Those who are interested or have questions can contact the HCOA at 850-547-2345.
