The City of Bonifay, in partnership with the Bonifay Police Department and Bonifay Fire & Rescue, hosted the inaugural Colton’s Champions Classic on Saturday, May 16, at the Bonifay Recreation Center, a charity baseball and softball tournament benefiting the FOXP1 Syndrome Foundation.
The event was organized by Darryl Horne, Southern States Ambassador for the foundation, in honor of his three‑year‑old son, Colton Horne, who was diagnosed with FOXP1 syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that affects communication and development. The tournament aimed to raise funds and awareness while bringing families together in support of the cause.
Through community participation, sponsorships, and team entries, the event raised $6,646 for the International FOXP1 Foundation. During the May 18 Bonifay City Council meeting, the Bonifay Police Department, Bonifay Fire‑Rescue, and the City of Bonifay presented a check to tournament organizer Darryl Horne, whose son Colton inspired the event. Horne also presented championship rings to the departments in appreciation for their support and dedication to making the tournament a success.
Championship teams were recognized across multiple divisions. In baseball, the 8U champions were Samson, followed by the Holmes County Top Guns as runners‑up. The 10U division was won by the Geneva Panthers, with the Holmes County Sandlot Soldiers finishing second. The 12U champions were Cottonwood, and the Holmes County Space Cowboys earned runner‑up honors.
In softball, the 8U champions were the Grayton Flying Pigs, with the Holmes County Cotton Candy Crushers taking second place. The 10U division saw Wicksburg claim the championship title, while the Holmes County Crimson Tide finished as runners‑up.
Event organizers extended thanks to those who volunteered, donated, participated, and offered support, additionally thanking River Bend Outfitters for donating championship shirts for the winning teams.
