The Noma Town Council met Monday, June 1, taking action on several items affecting the community.
The main topic of discussion was the future of the Noma Volunteer Fire Department. Holmes County Sheriff John Tate attended the meeting to speak with council members and residents about the county’s plan to reorganize volunteer fire departments under Holmes County Fire Rescue. After discussion, the council voted to approve an initial interlocal agreement allowing the transition process to move forward.
While fire operations will move under Holmes County Fire Rescue, the Noma Fire Station will remain in town and continue serving the community. Sheriff Tate answered questions about how the transition will work and what residents can expect moving forward.
The council also voted to hire John McDaniel as town attorney. Noma has operated for several years without legal counsel, and council members state having an attorney available will assist with ordinance review, contracts, and other legal matters as they arise.
An agreement to utilize the Holmes County Sheriff’s inmate work crew during the summer was also approved by the council during the meeting. The crew will assist with mowing, trimming limbs, vegetation control, and other maintenance projects around town.
During the meeting, residents received an update on the Main Street paving project. The town has signed its construction contract with Southeast Construction Company, and the contract will begin July 6 and run through November 2. The project will include replacement of cross drains beneath Main Street and may involve full‑depth reclamation and regrading of portions of the roadway before paving begins. Based on the contractor’s schedule, paving work could start approximately 30 to 45 days after the contract start date, placing construction in late July or August. Once paving begins, the contractor estimates the work could be completed in about two weeks.
The council continues working on several infrastructure and improvement projects throughout town and expressed appreciation for the public’s continued involvement and support.
The next regular meeting of the Noma Town Council will be held Monday, July 6, 2026, at 6 p.m. at Noma Town Hall.
