STAFF REPORT
A Holmes County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) investigator observed a Nissan SUV rear-end another vehicle at the intersection of Highway 79 and Highway 90 December 27. The SUV then fled the scene, traveling erratically southbound on Highway 79.
The investigator activated emergency lights and sirens in an attempt to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver refused to pull over. The suspect vehicle turned east onto Brock Avenue, where it abruptly halted before accelerating again and suddenly applying its brakes, seemingly in an effort to force the deputy into a collision.
Deputies approached the vehicle and attempted to remove the driver, later identified as John McDaniel. McDaniel resisted arrest, pushing one deputy to the ground. As the struggle continued, another deputy deployed his department-issued Taser, but it had little effect on McDaniel.
After a brief altercation, multiple deputies were able to subdue McDaniel and take him into custody. A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered a baggie containing methamphetamine and a glass smoking pipe.
McDaniel faces multiple charges, including fleeing and attempting to elude law enforcement, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, reckless driving, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer with a motor vehicle, resisting arrest with violence, and battery on a law enforcement officer.
