Traffic stop leads to foot pursuit

A suspicious vehicle parked in the middle of the road with its lights off near the intersection of Sandpath and J.P. Powell Drive caught the attention of Holmes County Sherriff’s Office (HCSO) when called in January 18.

According to HCSO, upon arrival, deputies made contact with the vehicle’s occupants, identified as Robert Bassham and Bennie Thompson. K9 Timex was deployed for a free air sniff around the vehicle and alerted to the presence of narcotics. A subsequent search of Thompson’s person revealed a cigarette pack containing methamphetamine. During this interaction, Thompson fled on foot.

Deputies searched the vehicle and located additional methamphetamine and a glass pipe. Robert Bassham was immediately taken into custody and charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Holmes and Washington County K9 teams were notified and responded to assist in locating Thompson. Using a track established by the K9 teams and aerial support from the HCSO Drone Team, deputies successfully located Thompson, who was then taken into custody.

Bennie Thompson faces charges of possession of methamphetamine and resisting arrest without violence

Sheriff Tate extended his gratitude, in a press release on January 21, to the Holmes and Washington County K9 teams for their assistance in apprehending Thompson and ensuring the safety of our community.
