Matthew Phillip Thomas, 40, has been charged following an investigation into alleged inappropriate online communications with a minor in Holmes County.
According to the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO), Thomas has been charged with Obscene Material to a Minor and Transmission of Harmful Material to a Minor.
Authorities said the investigation began after a complaint was received by investigators from the Panama City Police Department and the Gulf Coast Children’s Advocacy Center regarding alleged communications between Thomas and a 13 year old Holmes County resident.
Investigators with HCSO executed search warrants on Thomas’s social media accounts during the investigation. According to officials, the review revealed multiple inappropriate and obscene messages sent to the child, along with explicit photos allegedly sent by Thomas.
Arrest warrants were issued, and on the morning of March 10, Thomas was taken into custody in Bay County by the United States Marshals Task Force and the Bay County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities said he will be extradited to Holmes County to face the charges.
Holmes County Sheriff John Tate encouraged parents to remain aware of their children’s online activity.
“Parents should stay involved and aware of who their children are communicating with online to help protect them from individuals who may try to exploit them,” Tate said.
Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing.
