Holmes County Council on Aging celebrates groundbreaking

Pictured in attendance at the groundbreaking from left to right are Florida Representative Shane Abbott, Holmes County Commissioner Wilmer Stafford, Holmes County Commissioner Earl Stafford, Executive Director of Holmes Council on Aging Michael Brown, Holmes County Commissioner Clint Erickson, Holmes Council on Aging board members Lauren Morris, Terry Mears, and Pam Godwin, Holmes Council on Aging Board of Directors President Donna Meldon, and Bobby Dalon, a senior in the community who frequents the center.

The Holmes County Council on Aging held a groundbreaking ceremony August 27 for the remodeling of the Holmes Council on Aging building. Located at 210 W Kansas Ave in Bonifay, the Council on Aging has long remained a cornerstone for connection and support for seniors in the community. The remodel seeks to improve facilities and increase space for the community to enjoy.

The project was made possible by an approximately $1.3 million grant and is the culmination of 4 years of effort by the Council and other leaders in the community. One of the key supporters in the project was Robert “Bob” Lewis Jones, former Chairman of the Republican Party of Holmes County, who passed away in 2022 before he could see the completion of the improvements.

“Seeing this come to fruition honors his memory,” says Michael Brown, Executive Director of the Holmes Council on Aging.

Upgrades are to include a brand-new kitchen, new bathrooms that are ADA compliant, walk in freezers, increased dining area space, new AC units, repaving of the parking lot, a free clinic, and the installation of a 16-foot front porch area with rocking chairs for the seniors to enjoy.

Brown shared his excitement at what these improvements represent for the community.

“We will be able to serve more seniors and provide them with better quality services,“ said Brown.

The Council is currently using 701 E Pennsylvania Avenue in Bonifay as a temporary space while renovations are underway, and the project is expected to be completed in April 2026.
