Arrest made in April shooting death of Holmes County child

Jimmy Myers

The Holmes County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) has announced the arrest of Jimmy Myers on a charge of aggravated manslaughter in connection with the April 2026 shooting death of a six‑year‑old child.

In April, Holmes County deputies responded to a residence on Twin Lake Drive in reference to a six-year-old child who had been shot. Upon arrival, deputies immediately began rendering aid to the child until Holmes County EMS arrived. The child was transported for medical treatment but later died from the injuries.

Investigators conducted an extensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Through interviews, search warrants, evidence collection, and review of forensic and toxicology results, they worked to establish the sequence of events leading up to the incident.

According to the investigation, Myers and the victim’s mother had used methamphetamine a couple of hours prior to the incident. The investigation further indicated that the victim’s mother later went to a nearby camper, while Myers remained at the residence with the six-year-old victim and the victim’s seven-year-old sibling.

Investigators determined that Myers showed the seven‑year‑old a firearm and allowed him to handle it. Myers then went to take a shower, leaving the firearm on a bed. While Myers was in the shower, the seven‑year‑old obtained the firearm and entered a bedroom where the six‑year‑old was present. The gun discharged, striking the child.

Toxicology results obtained during the investigation indicated that Myers tested positive for methamphetamine.

After the investigation was completed, the case was presented to the State Attorney’s Office for review. Following that review, an arrest warrant was issued for Myers, who was subsequently arrested and charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child and leaving a loaded firearm within access of a child.

The case is still ongoing.
