Holmes Library rock garden encourages positivity, creativity

Families and people stopping at the Holmes County Public Library can enjoy a new rock garden by the front entrance…and maybe even leave behind their own special rock.

The rock bed contains painted rocks left by community members. Some have personalized writings. Others are merely painted bright red.

Leaving behind collections of decorated rocks in public for others to find and add to has become a trend across the country in recent years.

“The library is always searching for new ways to reach our community,” Library Assistant Director Shawnda Langford said. “In this search we ran across the rock garden, remembering how big the rock painting was a few years ago, we knew this would be a great success.”

The rock bed is part of the Library offering “fun and inexpensive activities for family and friends to enjoy,” she said.

“The rocks can be enjoyed by all ages. Not just children,” Langford said.” Individuals can come in and paint anytime. Also, groups may schedule to use the annex building and have a great time. You can take one for inspiration, share one for motivation, or leave one. We have everything needed inside, at no cost to the public.”
