Freeport High School Hosts STEM Summer Camp for Local Students

Freeport, FL – This week, Freeport High School became a hub of excitement and innovation as it welcomed students from Holmes and Walton County schools for an exhilarating STEM summer camp. Sponsored by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Gaetz Aerospace Institute, the camp aimed to ignite a passion for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) among middle school students through engaging, hands-on activities.

Forget the confines of traditional textbooks – these young campers embraced the thrill of piloting drones, coding amphibious robots, and launching water rockets skyward. The immersive experience was designed not only to educate but also to create lasting memories, fostering a genuine love for STEM subjects.

“Imagine a classroom where the walls disappear and learning feels fun,” said Colleen Conklin, Executive Director of the Gaetz Aerospace Institute. “That’s what we’re all about. This summer camp is about igniting a passion for these incredible, underrepresented fields, all wrapped up in a week of unforgettable fun!”

The initiative underscores the Institute’s dedication to transforming education by making STEM subjects accessible and enjoyable. By providing students with the opportunity to engage in real-world applications of their studies, the camp aimed to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators.

“I was thrilled to fuel young minds with creativity, innovation, and excitement,” stated Bethlehem High School Teacher Kaycee Valcourt. “It was more than just fun to watch the students realizes the endless possibilities accomplished through STEM education, it was also motivating to see our future educators unveiled through this amazing program!”

As the week concluded, the young participants left not only with newfound knowledge and skills but also with a sense of wonder and enthusiasm for the possibilities that STEM fields offer. The Freeport High School STEM camp stands as a testament to the power of experiential learning in shaping the minds of future leaders.
