The City of Bonifay announced that it is removing artistically painted crosswalks installed earlier this year as part of an AARP Community Challenge grant after receiving a directive from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).
In June, Waukesha Way secured funding through the AARP Community Challenge, which supports quick-action projects to improve walkability, safety, and livability. The first phase of the project featured crosswalks painted by local artist Brandi D. Jordan. City officials stated the additions enhanced walkability while showcasing local creativity.
On August 21, FDOT issued a notice requiring the removal of all non-standard crosswalk markings. According to the department, the directive applies statewide, and non-compliance could result in the loss of state funding or removal of the markings at the City’s expense.
City officials confirmed that removal efforts are already underway in order to remain in compliance with state requirements. In a release, the City emphasized that its priorities remain public safety, legal compliance, and responsible use of public resources.
“The City of Bonifay values the partnership of Waukesha Way, the contributions of local artist Brandi D. Jordan, and the partnership with FDOT,” the statement read. Officials added that the City remains committed to identifying future opportunities to showcase local art and create spaces that reflect the community.
