A man wanted in Oregon on an attempted murder warrant has been sentenced to eight years in state prison after being found guilty of possessing firearms as a convicted felon during a 2024 traffic stop in Holmes County.
State Attorney Larry Basford announced that David Eugene Grant, 39, of Oregon, was convicted by a Holmes County jury following a brief 10-minute deliberation. Circuit Court Judge Russell Roberts handed down the eight-year sentence on Tuesday. The conviction stems from a June 18, 2024, incident in which Grant was found in possession of a Remington 12-gauge shotgun and a .38-caliber revolver, despite having a prior felony conviction in Oregon.
According to court testimony and evidence, the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a possible kidnapping involving a man allegedly holding a woman against her will in a Chevrolet Impala at a rest stop on County Road 81 near Ponce de Leon. Deputy Cory Guster located a vehicle matching the description and conducted a traffic stop. During a subsequent search of the vehicle, a shotgun was discovered beneath a suitcase in the trunk, while a revolver was located inside a sock within the same suitcase.
Holmes County Chief Prosecutor Jacob Cook called three witnesses during the trial and presented evidence establishing Grant’s status as a convicted felon and his unlawful possession of the firearms. A records check also confirmed that Grant was driving without a valid license and had an active Oregon warrant related to an attempted murder case involving a recent shooting.
Basford credited the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office for its swift response and investigative efforts, which led to the arrest and seizure of the weapons.
