According to a release from the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a domestic violence incident Wednesday evening that escalated into a barricaded subject situation involving gunfire.
At approximately 7 p.m. on Dec. 31, deputies met with a complainant who reported she had been battered at her residence on Twin Lakes Drive by her boyfriend, identified as Chris Carter. While deputies were taking the initial report, dispatch received an additional call advising that Carter was intoxicated and actively firing rounds at the residence.
Deputies immediately responded to the scene, where Carter had barricaded himself inside the home and refused commands to exit. Additional deputies, along with the HCSO SWAT Team, were called to assist. Law enforcement made multiple attempts to communicate with Carter and encourage a peaceful surrender; however, those efforts were initially unsuccessful.
After prolonged negotiations, deputies deployed multiple chemical agent canisters and utilized a surveillance robot. Following these measures, Carter ultimately surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody without further incident.
Several firearms and numerous spent shell casings were recovered from the scene and collected as evidence.
Carter was charged with domestic violence battery, reckless discharge of a firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and resisting arrest without violence. Authorities also reported that Carter is currently on probation out of Alabama for aggravated assault with a firearm.
The Holmes County Sheriff’s Office expressed appreciation to Holmes County EMS and the Bonifay Fire Department for staging nearby and standing by during the incident.
