BK‑8 Teen Court students gain firsthand look at justice system

Bonifay K‑8 (BK-8) Teen Court participants were given a unique opportunity on Tuesday, November 18 to observe the Wells Fargo ATM robbery trial, thanks to Holmes County Chief Prosecutor Jacob Cook, who also serves as Teen Court Judge. Although the defendant entered an open plea on the day of trial, students still gained valuable insight into courtroom procedures. With the trial ending early, students spent time learning directly from Cook, Clerk of Court Sam Bailey, Police Chief Johnny Whitaker, and Circuit Court Judge Russell Roberts. Judge Roberts led a mock court exercise, guiding students through scenarios that highlighted the challenges of witness testimony, jury selection, civic responsibility, and courtroom management. Holmes County Teen Court expressed gratitude to all who shared their time and expertise with the students. Special thanks were extended to Sheriff John Tate and Bonifay K‑8 Principals Chey Bowers and Tiffany Steverson for approving the trip, and to First Federal Bank for providing lunch at the Bonifay Woman’s Club.
