Holmes County Sheriff’s Office announces funding for jail expansion and emergency equipment

The Holmes County Sheriff’s Office announced that Holmes County is slated to receive $1.25 million in the 2026-27 Florida state budget for the Holmes County Jail Expansion Project, a funding allocation that county officials say will help address future detention needs.

According to a news release issued by the sheriff’s office, the appropriation will be used toward the construction of an additional housing pod at the existing Holmes County Jail. Sheriff John Tate said the project represents an important step in meeting the county’s growing correctional needs.

The sheriff’s office reported that county officials are currently in the process of selecting an architect to begin the design phase of the expansion.

The funding was secured through the state appropriations process with the support of Shane Abbott and Jay Trumbull, according to the release.

In addition to the jail expansion funding, the sheriff’s office announced that the state budget also includes $175,000 for emergency response equipment intended for use during storm-related events.

The sheriff’s office said the funding was sought following the tornadoes that impacted Holmes County earlier this year. According to the release, Representative Abbott toured damaged areas alongside members of the sheriff’s office and observed crews using rented skid steers to assist residents with debris removal.

Sheriff’s officials said the new appropriation will allow Holmes County to purchase its own equipment, reducing the need to rely on rental machinery during future disasters and improving the county’s ability to respond more quickly to emergency situations.

In a statement included in the release, Sheriff John Tate expressed appreciation to Representative Abbott and Senator Trumbull for their efforts in securing the appropriations.

“Their support and advocacy for our community are greatly appreciated, and these investments will have a lasting impact on the safety and well-being of our citizens,” Tate said.

The appropriations are included in the state’s fiscal year 2026-27 budget. Local officials expect additional details regarding project timelines and construction to become available as the architectural design process moves forward.
