Ponce de Leon High student wins state debate championship, Earns $50,000 scholarship

Gavyn Purvis named Champion of the Ronald Reagan Debate, received a $50,000 scholarship and trophy named in honor of Charlie Kirk.

A student from Ponce de Leon High School has claimed top honors at one of Florida’s most competitive academic events, earning a state championship title and a substantial scholarship award.

Gavyn Purvis was named champion of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Debate during the Florida Civics and Debate Initiative (FCDI) State Championship, securing a $50,000 scholarship and a championship trophy in honor of Charlie Kirk.

The statewide competition, held at New College of Florida and State College of Florida, brought together a record 748 middle and high school students, nearly doubling participation from the previous year. Students advanced to the championship by first qualifying through regional competitions, earning their place among the state’s top debaters.

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Debate is considered one of the premier events of the championship, emphasizing respectful discourse, critical thinking, and the ability to articulate and defend positions on complex civic issues. Participants are required to analyze topics tied to American government and public policy while demonstrating strong communication skills under pressure.

“Florida continues to lead the nation in civics education because we are equipping students with the knowledge and skills to engage in meaningful debate and defend the principles that define our country,” said Commissioner Anastasios Kamoutsas. “The students competing in this year’s championship have demonstrated excellence in civic knowledge, critical thinking and communication.”

Purvis’ performance placed him at the top of a highly competitive field, outperforming fellow finalists from across the state in multiple rounds of structured debate.

“Florida’s Civics and Debate Initiative is not just preparing students to win championships—it’s preparing them to lead,” said Rep. Jennifer Canady, chair of the Florida House Education and Employment Committee. “Through debate, these students are learning how to think clearly, speak confidently, and engage respectfully in the ideas that shape our future.”

Organizers noted that the program continues to grow rapidly, with thousands of students participating statewide and hundreds of volunteer judges supporting competitions. Since 2020, participation has expanded significantly, reflecting increased emphasis on civic education and student engagement.

“Debate teaches students how to think critically, communicate their ideas clearly and how to respectfully engage with others who have differing perspectives,” said philanthropist Patricia Duggan, whose contributions help fund scholarships for competitors.
