Holmes County Commissioners extend Corbin contract, approve pay increase following resignation announcement

The Holmes County Board of County Commissioners has voted to retain Project Coordinator David Corbin, following his recent announcement that he planned to resign from the position.

During a special meeting held September 15, Commissioners unanimously approved a one-year extension of Corbin’s contract along with an increase in his annual salary to $70,000.

County records show Corbin’s previous annual salary was $63,600. The newly approved salary represents an increase of $6,400 per year, or approximately 10.1%.

The decision comes after Corbin previously announced his resignation from the position, raising questions about the future of the county administrative role.

Despite the Board’s unanimous vote, the proposal drew opposition from some residents attending the special meeting.

Those speaking against the agreement raised concerns about provisions of the one-year contract and the potential financial implications for taxpayers should Corbin be released from the position before the agreement expires.

Residents opposed to the motion argued that, under their interpretation of the contract, if Corbin were terminated or otherwise released from the position for certain reasons during the contract period, the county could potentially be responsible for paying the remaining value of his one-year salary.

Opponents characterized that possibility as a potential misuse of county funds, questioning whether the county should enter into an agreement that they believe could leave taxpayers responsible for compensation even if Corbin were no longer serving in the position.

The concerns expressed by residents did not change the outcome of the vote, with Commissioners ultimately voting unanimously to approve the one-year extension and $70,000 annual salary.

With the agreement approved, Corbin is expected to remain in his role as Project Coordinator rather than moving forward with his previously announced resignation.

The vote provides continuity in the position for the coming year while also placing the terms of Corbin’s employment agreement and the County’s potential financial obligations under it under increased public scrutiny.
