Bank closure in Bonifay sparks community outcry

Regions Bank has announced plans to close its Bonifay branch and consolidate operations with the Chipley branch, a move that has sparked dissatisfaction among Bonifay residents. According to a statement from Ashley Foster, Senior Business Partner for Media Relations at Regions, the decision follows a comprehensive review of the bank’s branch network and digital services across Florida.

“Regions consistently reviews its branch network and digital banking services to ensure we are investing our resources where customers use them most,” Foster explained. “A careful review of our branch network in Florida identified an opportunity to consolidate the Bonifay Branch into the Chipley Branch, about 15 minutes from the Bonifay Branch. Decisions such as these are made based on several factors, including customer traffic, volume and demand, as well as the availability of other nearby Regions locations. Our teams at both Bonifay and Chipley are ready to work with customers one-on-one through the transition and to answer any questions. And, as always, our enhanced digital banking tools are always just a tap or click away for efficient banking options whenever it’s most convenient for customers.”

Despite these reassurances, many Bonifay residents are unhappy with the decision. Bonifay residents voiced concerns in a Bonifay Fl Community Facebook group. Many express dissatisfactions with the way the community is turning away new business.  Jules Bends, a long-time Bonifay resident, voiced her frustration, stating, “I was upset by today’s mail with the notice of the closing of our Region’s Bank branch. This takes effect on December 5th. They are merging with the Chipley branch. We cannot afford to keep losing businesses in Bonifay. We need growth, not downsizing. Washington County continues to grow. Holmes County does not appear to be doing anything to prevent migration nor encourage new businesses. For myself, I will be changing banks; going to Chipley, when I need to use bank services, is not convenient.”

As Bonifay prepares for the branch closure, the community grapples with concerns over the economic impact and the loss of yet another local business.
